During the biotherapeutic protein production

process, a large number of chemical and/

or structural changes can occur. Two of the

most common modifications are:

• Deamidation – damage of

amide-containing side chains of amino

acids such as asparagine and glutamine

• Methionine oxidation – which deactivates

some protein activities

These chemical changes can reduce or

even negate the effect of the protein. During

protein characterization, confirmation of

these modifications is required.
