During the biotherapeutic protein production
process, a large number of chemical and/
or structural changes can occur. Two of the
most common modifications are:
• Deamidation – damage of
amide-containing side chains of amino
acids such as asparagine and glutamine
• Methionine oxidation – which deactivates
some protein activities
These chemical changes can reduce or
even negate the effect of the protein. During
protein characterization, confirmation of
these modifications is required.
